Mental illnesses are one of the impairments of disabilities. Mental health is not well known as part of disability as it is harder to see within people. Mental health issues are becoming rapidly increasing around the world. My thesis investigates the cause of this mental issues. In this very era people turn to society within technology such as social media. During their use in social media they seem to be trapped in another new world with different society that separates them from the real world. This gives negative influences on people in which social media starts to disable people to experience mental disorders such as depression. This disorder is socially constructed by our surrounded community and yet we neglect this as a community. Why is there an increase in number of users in social media? Is the built environment not full filling the needs of people to socialize?

Why are we normalised into this society where we constantly have to pretend and act differently to the real world from social media. What is your identity? What is the true you? Social media can provide a positive impact but there are power and control that tells us the reality. Is the reality full of anonymous people in our society, are we simply hiding our weaknesses or identity to show our best?

The brief

Within the design report, I have produced a variety of artistic responses to the issue of disability that are socially constructed. Exploring the mental state of the individuals that are close in contact with social media. I have created artistic outputs weekly in which each of them links to the issue that I tried to explore. From the methodologies of different artists, I started to incorporate it to my outputs. By learning those methods and methodologies of these artists I have been able to understand how to create a viewpoint of their thoughts and ideas to formulate and enact to my response of the chosen issue.

In order to formulate outputs, researches of artist were needed. By exploring these methodologies that differ from each output, it gave me critical thinking and engagements to what decisions I have made. These processes emerge ideas together to form my research question in more depth. The main research question is revealed at the start of this document, but the sub questions and further ideas are expressed at the end with a summary.

Define an issue

Racism was the issue given for the summer brief. However, in studio 1 we had the freedom to explore a different issue that are of concerns to us. This issue then needs to be performed through the investigations and process in places with people. We were constantly thinking about how to affect the audience and engage them directly through our outputs.

Although we started with the same issue in the summer, everyone had different issues at the end. The method that we apply through the process of investigating our research questions are very different on how it has been applied.

Defining the design research method

At the end of the studio 1, we need to emerge our ideas to define what the appropriate method is for a chosen issue. By this method we will be using this to analyse and define the history and theory of art of our research method in conjunction to architecture.

At the end of the explorations in studio 1, we will have wide range of options that expresses our issue and the best work will trigger our thoughts to carry out in studio 2. We will make sure that development of methodologies produces the work with architectural concerns in which we will apply to are personal architectural practice.
